🧭 Choosing Your First Unit Study
So you’re ready to begin! 🎉
Here’s how to make your first steps simple and stress-free.
✏️ Step 1: Take the Placement Tests
Before you choose a unit study, we recommend taking the short placement assessments for reading and grammar. These will help you determine which of our three learning levels best fits your child’s current needs:
- Beginner (PK–1) — For early learners just getting started with letters, numbers, and listening-based learning.
- Intermediate (2–4) — For readers beginning to gain confidence, ready for light independent work and more detailed projects.
- Advanced (5–8) — For students reading independently, engaging in deeper thinking, and managing more complex tasks.
📌 You’ll find links to the placement tests on our Start Here page.
📚 Step 2: Choose Your Unit Study Topic
Each of our unit studies runs for 5 weeks and is built around a central theme that connects every subject into one cohesive learning experience.
Themes might include:
- 🎵 Harmony at Home — a study in music and family life
- 🇺🇸 George Washington & Obedience — a character-focused dive into early American history
- 👩🦯 Fanny Crosby & Biblical Self-Worth — exploring how God values every life, through the story of a blind hymn writer
Most of our unit studies are built around a single godly character trait, which is also echoed in our core subject workbooks.
We recommend choosing a unit study and core subjects that share the same character trait, to give your child a consistent and deeply rooted theme throughout the day.
That said, parents are absolutely free to choose any combination that best fits their child’s needs and interests. You know your family best — and that flexibility is one of the joys of homeschooling!
📖 Step 3: Pick the Right Book for Your Level
Once you’ve chosen your topic and level, just order the corresponding unit study book.
Each book contains everything your child needs:
- ✅ Daily lessons
- ✅ Hands-on activities
- ✅ Reading assignments
- ✅ Science and history explorations
- ✅ Bible time
- ✅ And more!
You won’t need to gather a pile of resources — it’s all in one place. (If anything extra is needed, such as a specific storybook, we’ll let you know clearly on the ordering page.)
✨ It really can be that simple. And we’re here if you need help choosing the perfect fit.
