📘 What Is Lapbooking?
Lapbooking is a hands-on, creative method of notebooking that helps children process and organize what they’ve learned in a fun, engaging way. It’s especially helpful for visual and kinesthetic learners and works beautifully across all ages.
A lapbook is essentially a collection of mini-booklets, flaps, foldables, and graphic organizers—each focused on a specific topic or sub-topic. These are then assembled into a file folder (or similar base) that can literally sit on a child’s lap—hence the name!
📂 What’s Inside a Lapbook?
Each lapbook reflects what your child has studied. Inside, you might find:
- Mini-books: cut and folded paper summarizing facts or telling a story
- Timelines, diagrams, or life cycles
- Vocabulary pockets with key terms
- Scripture copywork or character traits
- Drawings, maps, or photos
- Creative responses, such as prayers, poems, or acrostics
🎨 Why We Use Lapbooking in Our Curriculum
Lapbooking combines creativity, review, and retention. It allows students to:
- Process information by summarizing in their own words
- Engage with lessons on a tactile level
- Review independently by flipping through their own work
- Take pride in their finished projects
This method works well across multiple subjects—from history and science to Bible study and literature. It’s especially suited to unit study learning.
✂️ Do I Need to Be Crafty?
Not at all! We provide all the lapbook templates and step-by-step directions. You simply print, cut, fold, and assemble. (You’ll just need scissors, glue, and a file folder.)
You don’t need fancy supplies or advanced skills—just a willingness to sit with your child and enjoy the process together.
📅 How Lapbooking Fits Into Our Program
Each week, you’ll receive optional lapbook components that correspond with that week’s lessons. Your child can complete them all at once, a little each day, or as part of their review. It’s flexible, hands-on, and fun—without being overwhelming.
🗃️ Bonus: Lapbooks Make Great Records!
If your state requires documentation of student learning, a lapbook is a beautiful tool to showcase understanding without the stress of worksheets or testing. They’re also great conversation starters for grandparents or portfolio evaluations!
📁 Lapbooking is a beautiful blend of learning, creating, and connecting—
one mini-book at a time.
